Crucially, the study showed that cognitive performance was significantly lower among physically frail individuals compared to their prefrail and robust peers. Physical frailty, which was defined according to Fried's physical criteria, directly correlated with a higher rate of cognitive failure. The study also demonstrated that older adults with pathologic cognition were more frequently dependent. This dependency was measured using standard activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scales.

While high BMI is often a topic of concern in midlife, a low BMI in older age poses a distinct threat to both physical and mental health. A low BMI in late life is frequently associated with sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and physical strength.
